about

An eclectic selection of Christmas songs from traditions around the world, sung in mostly unaccompanied harmony by Muldoon's Picnic and guests.

In a spirit of seasonal togetherness, Muldoons are joined by some friends and former members, and by five local singing groups: the Glad Community Choir, Glasgow Madrigirls, Govanhill Voices, Voicebeat and Voicemale. There is even occasional use of musical instruments.

"Then shepherds strike in, join your voice to the choir, And catch a few sparks of celestial fire!"

Track Name: Here we come a-wassailing
Here we come a-wassailing among the leaves so green,
Here we come a wandering so fairly to be seen
Now is winter-time strangers travel far and near,
And we wish you, send you, a happy New Year.

Bud and blossom, bud and blossom, bud and bloom and bear,
So we may have plenty of cider all next year;
Apples are in capfuls are in bushel bags and all,
And there’s cider running out of every gutter hole.

Down here in the muddy lane there sits an old red fox,
Starving and a-shivering and licking his old chops;
Bring us out your table and spread it if you please,
And give us hungry wassailers a bit of bread and cheese.

I’ve got a little purse and it’s made of leather skin,
A little silver sixpence it would line it well within;
Now is winter-time; strangers travel far and near,
And we wish you, send you a happy New Year.
Track Name: New celestial
Come let us all rejoice
To see this happy morn,
We’ll tune our hearts and raise our voice
This day our Saviour’s born. ×3

"Go, humble swain," said he
"To David’s city fly,
"The promised Infant born today
"Doth in a manger lie." ×3

Glory to God on high!
And heav’nly peace on earth;
Goodwill to men, to angels joy,
At our Redeemer’s birth! ×3

Track Name: Joseph and his wedded wife
Old Joseph and his wedded wife,
Together as they met,
Betwixt them both they ne’er shall part,
How happy they may be.

No mortal man can remember well
When Christ our lord was born;
He was crucified between two thieves
And crownèd with the thorns.

No mortal man can remember well
When Christ died on the rood;
It was for we and our wickedness
Christ shed his precious blood.

No mortal man can remember well
When Christ was wrappèd in clay;
He was buried in a new sepulchre
Where no man ever lay.

God bless the master of this house
With happiness beside;
And where he walks or where he rides
Lord Jesus be his guide.

God bless the mistress of this house
With gold chain round her breast;
Wherever she weeps or where she sleeps
Lord send her soul to rest.

Gold bless your house, your children too,
Your cattle and your store;
The Lord increase you day by day
And send you more and more.
Track Name: Whilst shepherds watched
While shepherds watch’d their flocks by night,
All seated on the ground,
The angel of the Lord came down,
And glory shone all round.

"Fear not," said he, for mighty dread
Had seized their troubled mind;
"Glad tidings of great joy I bring
To you and all mankind."

"To you in David’s town this day
Is born of David’s line
A Saviour who is Christ the Lord,
And this shall be the sign:

The heav’nly Babe you there shall find
To human view displayed,
All meanly wrapped in swathing bands,
And in a manger laid."

Thus spake the seraph, and forthwith
Appeared a shining throng
Of angels praising God, who thus
Addressed their joyful song:

"All glory be to God on high
And on the earth be peace.
Goodwill henceforth from heav’n to men
Begin and never cease."
Track Name: Diadem
All hail the power of Jesus' name!
Let angels prostrate fall,
Bring forth the royal diadem,
And crown Him Lord of all.

Ye saints redeemed of Adam's race,
Ye ransomed from the fall,
Hail Him who saves you by His grace,
And crown Him Lord of all.

Sinners, whose love can ne'er forget
The wormwood and the gall,
Go, spread you trophies at His feet
And crown Him Lord of all.

Let every people, every tribe
On this terrestrial ball
To him all majesty ascribe
And crown Him Lord of all.

O that with yonder sacred throng
We at His feet may fall!
Join in the everlasting song,
And crown Him Lord of all.

Tan chiquet e tan polit
Com t'és nat aquesta nit,
Lucifer serà scarnit,
Tot l'infern n'aurà gran pena.

Los angeus n'an gran plausir,
Vent complit nostre deusir,
Que l'alt cel s'a de fornir
De gascons per bella strena.

E sonaven tots acors
Ab rebequins e manacors
Y ab veus autes grans e forts
Dansaven l'hauta serena.

Tots ensemps li fan la xiera,
En esta nit plazentiera
Davan la Vergen partiera
Que trau lo món de cadena.
Track Name: Hail, smiling morn
Hail, smiling morn!
That tips the hills with gold,
Whose rosy fingers ope the gates of day.

Who the gay face
Of nature does unfold,
At whose bright presence
Darkness flies away,
Hail!

Track Name: As shepherds in Jewry
As shepherds in Jewry were guarding their sheep,
Promisc'ously seated, estranged from sleep,
An angel from heaven presented to view,
And thus he accosted the trembling few:
Dispel all your sorrows and banish your fears,
For Jesus your Savior in Jewry appears.

Though Adam the first in rebellion was found,
Forbidden to tarry in hallowed ground,
Yet Adam the second appears to retrieve
The loss you sustain'd by the Devil and Eve.
Then shepherds, be tranquil, this instant arise,
Go visit your Savior and see where He lies.

A token I leave you, whereby you may find
This heavenly stranger, this friend to mankind:
A manger's His cradle, a stall His above,
The oxen are near him and blow on your God.
Then shepherds, be humble, be meek and be low,
For Jesus your Savior's abundantly so.

This wonderous story scarce cooled on the ear,
When thousands of angels in glory appear,
They join in the concert, and this was the theme:
All glory to God and good will towards men.
Then shepherds strike in, join your voice to the choir,
And catch a few sparks of celestial fire.

"Hosanna" the angels in ecstasy cry,
"Hosanna" the wandering shepherds reply;
Salvation, redemption are center'd in one,
All glory to God for the birth of His Son.
Then shepherds, adieu, we commend you to God,
Go visit the Son in His humble abode.

To Bethlehem city the shepherds repair'd,
For full confirmation of what they had heard;
They enter'd the stable, with aspect so mild,
And there they beheld the Mother and Child.
Then make proclamation, divulge it abroad,
That gentle and simple may hear of the Lord.
Track Name: Byla cesta
Byla cesta, byla ušlapaná,
kdo ju šlapal, kdo ju šlapal?
Matka Krista Pána.

Postřetla ju tam svatá Alžběta,
kam ty kráčíš, kam ty kráčíš,
sestřičko má milá?

Kráčím, sestro, kráčím do kostela,
poslúchať mše, poslúchať mše,
svatého nešpora.

Nechoď sestro, nechoď do kostela,
povídajú, povídajú,
že porodíš syna.

Enem jedna voda nezamrzla,
kde Maria, kde Maria
pro vodu chodila,
by Ježíšku, by Ježíšku
kúpel udělala.
Track Name: Hark the glad sound
Hark, the glad sound! the Saviour comes,
The Saviour promised long;
Let every heart prepare a throne,
And every voice a song.

He comes the prisoners to release,
In Satan’s bondage held;
The gates of brass before Him burst,
The iron fetters yield.

He comes the broken heart to bind,
The bleeding soul to cure;
And with the treasures of His grace
To enrich the humble poor.

Our glad hosannas, Prince of Peace,
Thy welcome shall proclaim;
And Heav’n’s eternal arches ring
With Thy belovèd Name.
Track Name: Wassail song
O mistress, at your door our wassail begins,
Pray open the door and let us come in

With our wassail, wassail, wassail, wassail,
And joy come to our jolly wassail.

O mistress, at your door we kindly salute,
For it is an old custom you cannot dispute.

O mistress and master sitting down by the fire,
While we poor wassail-men are traveling through the mire.

O mistress and master, sitting down at your ease,
With their hands in their pockets to give what they please, to...

Come young men and maidens, I pray you draw near;
Come fill up our bowl with some cider or beer,

You see how we'll smile at our flowing bowl--
Just now it is empty, by and bye it'll be full,

I wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year,
A plenty of money and a barrel of beer.

I wish you a blessing and a long time to live
Because you're so free and so willing to give to...

Track Name: Farewell Advent
Farewell, Advent, Christmas is come!
Farewell from us both all and some!

With patience thou hast us fed,
And made us go hungry to bed;
For lack of meat we were nigh dead;
Farewell from us both all and some!

Our bread was brown, our ale was thin,
Our bread was musty in the bin,
Our ale sour before we did begin
Farewell from us both all and some!

This time of Christ's feast natal,
We will be merry, great and small,
And thou shalt go out of this hall;
Farewell from us both all and some!

Advent is gone, Christmas is come;
Be we merry now, all and some!
He is not wise that will be dumb
In ortu Regis omnium.
Track Name: Stannington
Sing all ye people of the earth today
For Jesus Christ was born on Christmas Day
Ring out, ye joyous bells in Heaven, ring on
For Christ is born.

Born in a stable bare of humble birth
Born of a Virgin pure, to dwell on earth
Let all mankind rejoice on this great day
For Christ is born.

He came to us that wars on earth may cease
He came to bring us hope and joy and peace
Worship o nations at His feet today
For Christ is born.

Glory to God on high, we all will sing
Glory and praise we render to our King
Peace on earth, goodwill to men this day
For Christ is born.
Track Name: Shepherds arise
Shepherds, arise, be not afraid
With hasty steps repair
To David's city, seee the maid
With her blest infant there.

Sing, sing, all earth, eternal praises sing
To our Redeemer and our heavenly King.

Laid in a manger view the child
Humility divine.
Sweet innocence sounds meek and mild.
Grace in his features shine.

For us the Saviour came on earth
For us his life he gave.
To save us from eternal death
And to raise us from the grave.
